How to Get There

Upper-end stays are the small boutique lodges near Kanas village that book out months ahead in autumn, priced ¥900 to 1,500 including dinner. Food
The Altai kitchen is meat- and dairy-heavy. At a small canteen in Burqin I paid ¥45 for a plate of laghman (hand-pulled noodles with beef) and ¥30 for fried river fish, a local whitefish called qiebalu. Inside the park, a bowl of horse-meat naan stew cost ¥38, and a litre of fresh cow’s milk was ¥10 from a herder near Hemu. Prices inside the scenic area run about 30% above Burqin town, so I stocked up on water and snacks at the Burqin supermarket before driving in.
Practical Tips
- Book accommodation before September 20. Autumn rooms inside Hemu and Kanas sell out, and walk-up prices triple.
