I have stood at the Kanas Lake pier in late September wearing a t-shirt at noon and a down jacket by dinner. The lake, in the Altay mountains of northern Xinjiang, runs on its own clock, and the “best time” question deserves a honest, month-by-month answer rather than a single date. After eight seasons of guiding trips through the region, here is when I actually send people, and when I tell them to stay home.
Kanas Lake Quick Reference
| Location | Altay Prefecture, northern Xinjiang, ~780 km from Urumqi |
| Elevation | ~1,374 m at the lake surface |
| Peak season | June – October (reserve shuttle + lodges) |
| Low season | November – April (many roads and lodges closed) |
| Our pick | September 15 – October 5 for autumn color |

What the Seasons Actually Do
Kanas sits at a latitude close to Moscow but at altitude, so the swing between summer and winter is extreme. The larches and spruce that ring the lake change the entire mood of the place four times a year. I have photographed the same viewpoint in July green and October gold, and they look like different continents.
How to Get to Kanas
Most travellers fly into Urumqi (URC), then either drive north or take a regional flight to Kanas Airport (KJI, seasonal, roughly June–October). From Burqin, shared taxis run to the Jiadengyu entrance, where a mandatory shuttle bus carries you into the reserve. Foreign passport holders need a border-area permit for Altay — see our Xinjiang travel guide for the current process.
Best Time to Visit Kanas Lake, Month by Month
May – early June: The road from Urumqi opens but high passes can still close from late snow. Few crowds, bargain lodging, but the larches are not yet gold.
July – August: Green, warm, and busy. This is family-trip season. Daytime highs reach the low 20s°C, but afternoon storms are common. Book lodges 3–4 weeks ahead.
September 1–14: My quiet favorite. Summer crowds have thinned, prices ease, and the first larches start to turn in the high country. Stable weather most years.
September 15 – October 5: The window most photographers target. The larches go gold, the water stays clear, and the light is low and warm. After the National Day week (early October), both crowds and prices drop hard. This is when we run our own trips.
October 6 – November: Snow arrives. The Duku and some reserve roads begin to close. Beautiful but unpredictable; only go if you accept cancellations.
December – April: Deep winter. The lake freezes, the valley goes silent, and most wooden lodges shut. Access is limited to hardy overland trips. For a wider picture, see best time to visit Xinjiang.
Where to Stay
- Budget: Guesthouses in Jiadengyu (entrance town), ¥150–300/night in shoulder season.
- Mid: Wooden lodges inside the reserve near the lake, ¥500–900/night — book early in autumn.
- Upper: Kanas Village resorts; ¥1,200+ with inconsistent heating.
Food Around the Lake
Cold-water trout (locals call it Kanas salmon) grilled at roadside spots runs about ¥80–120 per fish. Dairy is everywhere: thick kaymak with honey and salty suutei tsai milk tea from Kazakh vendors. A plate of laghman noodles in nearby Burqin cost us ¥28.
Practical Tips
- Pack layers even in summer; the daily temperature swing is 15°C+.
- Download offline maps — signal drops inside the valley.
- Carry cash; some shuttle and food vendors do not take foreign cards.
- Book the autumn shuttle pass and lodges before you fly, not on arrival.
- If photography is the goal, target September 20–30 and arrive before 9 a.m. for still water.
Sample Timing Itinerary
Day 1: Fly Urumqi → Kanas (KJI), shuttle to lake, sunset at the pier.
Day 2: Guanyu Pavilion climb for the panorama, afternoon at Hemu Village mist.
Day 3: Drive the fall-color route back via Burqin.
FAQ
Is October too late? Early October is excellent and cheap after National Day, but watch for the first snow closing passes.
Can I see autumn color in summer? No. The gold larches only appear from mid-September.
Do I need a permit year-round? The Altay border permit is required for foreign passport holders whenever you visit; arrange it through your hotel or local PSB.
How many days for the best experience? Two full days covers the lake and Hemu without rushing.
