The first time I went looking for Urumqi’s Shuishang Leyuan, in July 2019, I packed swim shorts and a quick-dry towel. That was a mistake. The name translates literally as “water amusement park,” and I assumed slides, wave pools, the whole thing. What I found instead was a large municipal lake park in Shuimogou District: willows, paddle boats at roughly 40 RMB per half hour, retired families doing morning exercises under the poplars, and a small fairground section with a Ferris wheel and bumper cars that felt like it had been there since the 1990s. I walked in at 09:30, sat on a bench for twenty minutes feeling slightly cheated, and then spent three genuinely pleasant hours there. I have been back twice since, most recently in June 2023 with a friend’s two kids in tow, aged six and nine. The park works best when you know what it actually is: a free, shaded, walkable green space in a city that gets very hot and very dusty in midsummer, with cheap kid-friendly rides bolted on. It is not a destination attraction. It is a good morning, and a good place to reset between the museum and the bazaar.

What the Park Is Actually Like
The lake sits at the centre, an artificial body of water big enough that you cannot see detail on the far bank. A paved loop runs around it, maybe two kilometres if you follow the outer path, and the willows along the western edge lean far enough over the water that you get shade for most of the walk. On my June 2023 visit the temperature hit 33°C by one in the afternoon, and the difference between the shaded path and the open plaza near the entrance was noticeable enough that we simply stopped crossing open ground.
The amusement section is concentrated in the northern corner. Ferris wheel, a small roller coaster the kids called “the beginner one,” bumper cars, a carousel, a few coin-operated machines. Prices were posted per ride rather than sold as a wristband, which suits adults who want to ride nothing and children who want to ride three things. The nine-year-old spent 90 RMB across the morning. Nothing was queued more than ten minutes on a Tuesday.
Boat hire is the thing most visitors actually do. Pedal boats and small electric boats operate from a dock on the eastern shore. The staff wanted a deposit in cash, around 100 RMB returned on handover, which caught out a young couple ahead of me who were carrying only phone payments. Bring a hundred-yuan note.
What surprised me most was the social texture. Around 09:00 there were four separate exercise groups going at once: two square-dancing troupes with speakers, a tai chi circle, and older men working through a routine with wooden swords near the north gate. By 11:00 they had dissolved and the park belonged to parents with strollers. For photographs of ordinary Urumqi life, the first two hours after opening beat any afternoon here.
How to Get There
Getting to the park is the easiest logistics problem in this Urumqi Water Park Guide, because it sits inside the city rather than out in the mountains.
From central Urumqi (Hongshan or Renmin Square): a Didi ride took me 18 minutes and 21 RMB at 09:00 on a weekday, and about 28 minutes in the 18:00 crush. Standard taxis run on the meter and cost roughly the same. Several city bus routes serve the Shuishang Leyuan area, but route numbers in Urumqi have been reorganised more than once, so I would check the live map in Amap or Baidu Maps on the morning rather than trust a number printed here. Type the Chinese name 水上乐园 into the app and it will resolve correctly.
From Urumqi Diwopu International Airport: roughly 25 to 35 km depending on which terminal and which ring road your driver picks, generally 40 minutes and 70 to 90 RMB by taxi. Nobody sane goes straight from the airport to a city park, but if you land early and cannot check in until 14:00, it is a reasonable place to kill the gap.
From the railway stations and the rest of Xinjiang: both Urumqi Station and Urumqi South are a 20 to 30 minute drive outside peak hours, so the park is a soft landing after an overnight train. Flights from Kashgar take about two hours, from Yining about one hour, and high-speed rail from Turpan just under an hour. Best Time to Visit: What This Urumqi Water Park Guide Recommends
Spring, April to May. The willows come back late in Urumqi. In mid-April 2023 the trees were still bare sticks and the lake edge looked grey and unloved. By the second week of May it had turned green and the boats were running. Daytime temperatures sit between 15°C and 24°C, which is comfortable, but wind off the Junggar Basin can make mornings sharp. Bring a layer.
Summer, June to August. This is peak season and, honestly, peak sense. Urumqi summers run hot and dry, commonly 30°C to 36°C in July, and a shaded lakeside loop is exactly what you want at that point. The catch is timing: between 13:00 and 17:00 the open sections are genuinely unpleasant. Go early, leave by noon, or arrive again after 18:30 when the light softens and the evening crowd comes out. Sunset in July lands close to 22:00 local daylight because the whole region runs on Beijing time despite sitting far west, so an “evening” visit here means 20:00, not 18:00.
Autumn, September to October. My favourite. Early September still gives you 25°C afternoons with none of the July glare, and by the first week of October the poplars turn hard yellow. Boat operations usually wind down as the weather cools, so check on the day if a boat ride is the point of your visit.
Winter, November to March. The lake freezes. Some years the park runs a small ice-play area with sledges and ice bikes, some years it does not, and I would not build a plan around it. Urumqi winter temperatures drop below minus 15°C regularly and the air quality in the basin can be poor in December and January. Skip it unless you are already in the neighbourhood.

Where to Stay
Nobody should book a hotel specifically to be near this park. Stay where the rest of your itinerary makes sense, which for most visitors means the Tianshan District core or near the railway station.
Budget, roughly 120 to 220 RMB per night. Chain properties like Hanting, 7 Days and Jinjiang Inn cluster around Xiaoximen and the railway station. Clean, small rooms, reliable hot water, staff who may not speak English. Confirm before booking that the property accepts foreign passports, because a meaningful share of budget hotels in Urumqi are not registered to do so and will turn you away at the desk. This is the single most common problem I hear from readers.
Mid-range, roughly 300 to 550 RMB per night. Atour, Vienna Hotel and a range of local four-star properties around Renmin Square and Youhao Road. This is where I usually land. Breakfast is generally included, foreign-passport registration is routine, and you are ten to twenty minutes from most things in the city.
Upper, roughly 650 to 1,300 RMB per night. Sheraton, Hilton and the larger domestic five-stars in the southern business district. Worth it mainly for a reliable gym and an English-speaking front desk before heading somewhere remote.

Food
Park food is what you expect: ice cream, sausages on sticks, bottled drinks, a few noodle stands near the north gate. Fine for a snack. Prices inside run 30 to 50 percent above street level, so a 2 RMB bottle of water becomes 3 to 5 RMB.
Walk out to the surrounding streets for the real thing. Typical prices from my 2023 visit, which you should treat as indicative rather than fixed:
- Laghman (拌面), hand-pulled noodles with stir-fried lamb and vegetables: 25 to 35 RMB. Free noodle refills are standard at proper Uyghur restaurants. Ask for 加面.
- Polo (抓饭), rice pilaf with lamb and carrot: 20 to 30 RMB a plate.
- Lamb kebabs (烤肉): 5 to 8 RMB per skewer. Four skewers and a nan is a decent lunch.
- Nan bread: 3 to 6 RMB depending on size and whether it has sesame and onion.
- Dapanji (大盘鸡), big-plate chicken: 80 to 130 RMB, sized for three or four. Do not order it alone. I tried once and regretted it.
- Milk tea or watermelon juice: 8 to 18 RMB.
Xinjiang melon in season, roughly July through September, is sold by weight from carts on the pavement and is genuinely one of the best things about being here in summer. Around 4 to 8 RMB per jin.
Practical Tips
- Do not bring swimwear. Repeating this because I did it. There is no swimming and no waterslide complex, despite what the English name suggests.
- Carry about 150 RMB in cash. Boat deposits and some ride booths preferred cash on my visits. Everything else in Urumqi runs on WeChat Pay and Alipay, both of which now accept foreign cards, though verification can take a day.
- Bring your passport. Security checks are a routine part of daily life across Xinjiang, including at park entrances and metro stations. Carry the physical document, not a photo.
- Go before 11:00 in summer. The rest of this Urumqi Water Park Guide can be summarised as: heat is the main enemy and shade is the main asset.
- Sun protection is not optional. Urumqi sits at 43°N but the air is thin and dry, and I have burnt here in ways I never do at the same latitude in Europe.
- Watch the clock, both of them. Official Beijing time runs two hours ahead of solar time locally. Businesses often quote unofficial local time. Always confirm which one someone means.
- Ride tickets are per item. There was no all-day wristband on either of my visits, so budget per child rather than per family.
- Weekends are busy, and Sunday afternoon is the peak. A weekday morning is a completely different experience.
- Photograph people only with permission. The exercise groups are friendly and several waved me over, but ask first.
Sample Itinerary
A half-day that I have run twice and would run again.
- 08:30. Breakfast near your hotel. Nan, a boiled egg and milk tea, roughly 15 RMB.
- 09:00. Didi to the park, 15 to 20 minutes.
- 09:20. Enter at the main gate. Walk the western shore first, under the willows, while the exercise groups are still going.
- 10:00. Boat hire on the eastern dock. Half an hour on the water is plenty.
- 10:40. Amusement section if you have children. Ferris wheel for the view over the district, then two or three rides.
- 11:30. Leave before the heat sets in. Walk out to the surrounding streets.
- 12:00. Lunch: laghman or polo, roughly 30 RMB a head.
- 13:30. Indoor afternoon. The Xinjiang Museum is the obvious pairing and is free with advance reservation.
- 17:30. Hongshan Park for the pagoda and the city view as the light drops.
- 20:00. Dinner at the International Grand Bazaar, then walk it off.
FAQ
Is there actually a water park with slides in Urumqi? There are seasonal commercial water parks that open in summer, usually on the city outskirts, and their operating status changes year to year. Shuishang Leyuan itself is a lake park, not a slide park. If waterslides are the goal, search current listings rather than relying on the name.
How much does it cost to enter? The grounds were free on my visits. Boats and rides are charged individually, roughly 20 to 50 RMB each. Budget 100 to 150 RMB for a family morning with a few rides.
Is it worth visiting if I only have two days in Urumqi? Probably not, and no honest Urumqi Water Park Guide would claim otherwise unless you are travelling with children. With 48 hours I would prioritise the Xinjiang Museum, the International Grand Bazaar and a day trip to Tianshan Tianchi. This park is a third-day option.
Can foreign visitors go without a guide? Yes. It is an ordinary city park and I have visited independently every time. Carry your passport for checkpoints, and expect the occasional registration at hotels and transport hubs.
How long should I allow? Ninety minutes covers the lake loop at a relaxed pace. Three hours if you are hiring boats and riding things. Half a day if you have kids under ten and no particular schedule.
Is it accessible for wheelchairs or strollers? The main loop is paved and mostly flat, and I saw plenty of strollers. Some connecting paths in the amusement section have steps and uneven surfacing, so plan to skip those.
Where This Fits in a Longer Trip
Treat this park as connective tissue rather than a headline. It fills the awkward morning when your train arrives at 07:00, or the afternoon when a mountain day trip gets cancelled by weather, or the day a child in your group has run out of patience for museums.
