Urumqi Travel Guide

Published: July 8, 2026 | Author: Karl Huang

Urumqi (Ürümqi) is where almost every Xinjiang trip begins, and most travellers give it a single night before heading north to Kanas or south to Turpan. That is a mistake I made on my first trip in 2019, and I have spent every return visit trying to make up for it. The city is the most inland capital on Earth — over 2,500 km from the nearest ocean — and it blends Han, Uygur, Kazakh, and Hui cultures in a way you will not see elsewhere in China.

Urumqi Quick Reference

Role Capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region; main transport hub
Population ~4 million (metro)
Elevation ~800 m
Airport Urumqi Diwopu (URC), international
Best time May–October; winters are harsh but cheap

Urumqi Travel Guide

Why Spend Time in Urumqi

The Xinjiang attractions inside the city are underrated. The Xinjiang Regional Museum holds the “Loulan Beauty” mummies and excellent Silk Road textiles — free entry, bring your passport. The International Grand Bazaar is touristy but genuine for spices, dried fruit, and people-watching. We ate at a hole-in-the-wall behind the bazaar where the owner, a woman named Aynur, insisted we try her husband’s lamb skewers at ¥3 each.

How to Get to Urumqi

Diwopu airport connects to most Chinese hubs and a few Central Asian cities. The train station has high-speed links to Turpan (1.5 hrs) and Lanzhou. From the airport, the metro line 1 reaches the city center in ~40 minutes for ¥7. Ride-hailing apps work but require a China SIM.

Best Time to Visit Urumqi

Late spring through early autumn is comfortable. July averages 24°C. Winters drop to -15°C but hotel rates halve and the nearby Silk Road ski resorts open. Avoid the week of the October National Day holiday if you can — prices triple.

Where to Stay

  • Budget: Hostels near the train station, ¥80–150/night.
  • Mid: Business hotels along Renmin Road, ¥300–500/night, reliable heating and English signage.
  • Upper: International chain towers downtown, ¥900+/night.

Food in Urumqi

Start with da pan ji (big plate chicken) — a spicy stew of chicken, potatoes, and belt noodles; a full plate for two ran us ¥68. Then samsa (meat pastries from tandoor ovens, ¥5), laghman, and the yogurt with honey at the bazaar. For a wider plan, see our Xinjiang food guide.

Practical Tips

  1. Carry your passport; ID checks are common at hotels and stations.
  2. Get a local SIM at the airport for maps and ride apps.
  3. ATMs: Bank of China accepts most foreign cards; notify your bank first.
  4. The bazaar is busiest after 6 p.m. — go then for atmosphere.
  5. Use Urumqi as a 1–2 night launch pad, not a drive-through.

Sample 2-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Museum → Red Mountain Park → Grand Bazaar evening.
Day 2: Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) day trip (2 hrs each way) → back for an early night before your regional train.
