The first time I stayed overnight in Hoxud was in early October, and it turned out to be the smart move. I had driven in from Korla after a late lunch, parked near the county bus station, and walked the quiet grid of Tewulike Town as the light went long and gold. A vendor sold me a paper bag of sun-dried tomatoes for 10 RMB. The air was dry and cool, around 16°C at 6 p.m., and the Tianshan ridge behind town still held a cap of early snow. That contrast, a warm town and white peaks, is what sells Hoxud in autumn.
On a later July visit the script flipped. The town baked at 33°C and the draw was purely the water. I paid 45 RMB at the Golden Beach gate, rented a sun shade for 60 RMB, and spent the afternoon in water that read 23°C on the lifeguard’s float thermometer. Families from Korla pack the place on weekends in July and August, so if you want space, go on a weekday or arrive before 11 a.m.
How to Get There
Hoxud has no airport of its own, so everybody routes through Korla, the prefecture seat and the regional transport hub. Korla Airport (KRL) has daily flights from Urumqi, Xi’an, and Chengdu, and the train from Urumqi takes roughly four to five hours on the Southern Xinjiang line.
From Korla it is a short hop. A taxi or hired car covers the ~50 km in about 50 minutes via the G3012 expressway, and I have paid between 120 and 160 RMB for the ride when bargaining at the station. Public buses leave Korla’s south bus station roughly every hour and cost about 18 RMB, though the schedule slips on holidays. If you are already on a longer loop, Hoxud sits neatly between Korla and the Bosten Lake shore, so it rarely needs a dedicated detour.
Coming from Urumqi by road is about 470 km and a five to six hour drive. From Kashgar you are looking at more than 1,000 km, which is why most travelers treat Hoxud as a northern Xinjiang or Korla side trip rather than a destination on a southern loop.
Best Time to Visit Hoxud: Season by Season
Spring, from April to mid-May, is green and windy. The vineyards around the county start leafing out and the apricot trees bloom, but Xinjiang’s spring gales sweep the basin and can shut lake activities for a day. Daytime highs sit around 18 to 24°C, nights drop to single digits. I would not plan a swimming trip this early.
Summer, June through August, is the lake season. This is when Bosten Lake warms enough to swim, and Golden Beach fills with umbrellas. Daytime highs run 28 to 35°C in town, cooler by the water. The trade-off is crowds and price: lakeside rooms double on summer weekends. If the beach is your goal, this is the window, but pick a weekday.
Autumn, September into early October, is my pick for the full experience. Days hold 15 to 25°C, the sky stays clear, and the vineyards and red willow thickets turn gold. The grape and wine harvest brings small festivals and open cellar tastings. You can still swim at Golden Beach in late September, and by early October the water is brisk but the light is the best of the year.
Winter, November to March, is quiet and cold. Town lows fall below freezing, the beach closes, and many lakeside resorts shutter. The upside is empty roads, low hotel rates, and a clean view of snow on the Tianshan. Go then only if you want solitude and photography, not activities.
For most travelers I recommend late September to early October. You get comfortable weather, the harvest, and a still-swimmable lake in the first weeks, without the summer crush. Choose July or August instead if the water itself is the point.
Where to Stay
Budget options cluster in Tewulike Town. National-chain economy hotels and local guesthouses run about 150 to 220 RMB a night, and I have slept well at a home-style property there for 168 RMB. They are basic but clean, with hot water and Wi-Fi.
Mid-range sits at 280 to 450 RMB. A few local three-star hotels near the bus station offer larger rooms and included breakfast, handy if you are catching an early bus out.
For the upper tier, stay at the Bosten Lake shore. The Golden Beach resorts range from 600 to 1,200 RMB a night in July and August, dropping to roughly half that in the shoulder season. Book lakeside rooms a week ahead in summer; walk-up availability gets thin on weekends.
Food
Hoxud eats like the basin it sits in: lake fish, lamb, and vineyard produce. At the Golden Beach grill I paid 58 RMB for a plate of 五道黑 (wucha black carp) cooked over charcoal, and 48 RMB for pond smelt fried whole. In town, red willow lamb skewers cost 5 to 8 RMB each and taste brighter than the standard skewer because of the twig they are threaded on.
A bowl of laghman (拌面) runs 18 to 28 RMB, hand-pulled and loaded with tomato and pepper from local fields. Pilaf (抓饭) is 25 to 35 RMB with a side of pickled garlic. Cold noodle (凉皮) makes a 12 to 18 RMB lunch, and a glass of local Hoxud wine is 30 to 60 RMB depending on the label. Practical Tips
- Pack layers. Day and night temperatures can differ by 15 to 20°C, so a morning jacket becomes a noon burden and vice versa.
- Guard against the sun. The basin sits at altitude with thin, clear air, so bring a hat, sunglasses, and SPF 50. I burned in September despite the cool feel.
- Time the beach. Golden Beach entry is about 45 RMB and changes by season; weekdays and before 11 a.m. beat the crowds.
- Carry some cash. Mobile pay covers town shops, but small lakeside vendors and rural stalls still prefer notes.
- Respect the communities. Hoxud mixes Hui, Mongol, and Uygur residents; ask before photographing people and dress modestly at religious sites.
- Watch the wind. Spring gales can pause lake activities for a day, so keep one town-based backup plan.
- Fuel up before desert drives. Gas stations thin out north of town toward the Tianshan foothills.
