The best time for Xinjiang Road Trip Duku Highway depends entirely on which section you care about. Here is how the year actually breaks down.
May. The northern third opens mid-month but the Tianshan pass stays closed most years until June. Snow and ice make the top dangerous. Skip it unless you only want the Dushanzi canyon.
June. The full road usually opens around June 10 to 15. Wildflowers cover the alpine meadows near Bayinbuluke, and crowds are lighter than in July. Nights are cold at altitude, often near 5°C.
July and August. Peak season. Warm days (18 to 25°C on the passes), full services, and the most reliable weather. Expect more tour buses and slower traffic at photo stops. This is the safest window for a first drive.
September. My favorite. The larches near the pass turn gold, the air is clear, and the southern desert cools off. The road can close on short notice after mid-September if an early snow arrives, so watch the forecast daily.
October to April. Closed. The entire highway shuts for winter, normally from early October until the following June. Do not plan a drive in this window.

Where to Stay
Budget. Dorm beds and basic guesthouses in Dushanzi or Kuqa run 80 to 120 RMB a night. In Bayinbuluke, yurt stays near the grassland start at 100 RMB per person, but bathrooms are shared and cold at night.
Mid-range. Branded hotels in Dushanzi and Kuqa (Home Inn, Jinjiang Inn) cost 220 to 320 RMB. I stayed at a Jinjiang Inn in Dushanzi for 268 RMB and left at 6:30 a.m. to beat the gate queue.
Upper. Kuqa and Urumqi have four-star options at 500 to 800 RMB. If you want a hot shower and a real breakfast before the early start, book these the night before, because the small towns along the route sell out in July.
Food
The Duku passes through Han, Uyghur, and Kazakh communities, so the food changes with the elevation. In Dushanzi I had a 12 RMB bowl of laghman (hand-pulled noodles) with tomato and green pepper. Near Bayinbuluke a Kazakh family sold grilled mutton skewers at 5 RMB each and fresh koumiss (fermented horse milk) at 10 RMB a cup. In Kuqa, the Sunday bazaar does naan flatbread for 2 to 3 RMB and a full polo (rice with carrot and lamb) plate for 25 RMB.
Bring cash. Two of the three roadside stalls I used in 2023 had no card reader, and the mobile signal drops for long stretches on the pass. A 100 RMB stack of small bills saved me more than once.
Practical Tips
- Check the opening status the morning you leave. The highway closes on short notice for weather, and a phone call to your guesthouse is faster than driving 200 km to a locked gate.
- Start before 8 a.m. The gate queue at Dushanzi builds by 9, and the light on the northern canyon is best early.
- Fill the tank in Dushanzi or Kuqa. There is one fuel stop near Bayinbuluke, but queues form and it sometimes runs dry in peak season.
- Carry warm layers even in July. The pass can sit at 8°C while Kuqa bakes at 38°C the same afternoon.
- Download offline maps. Signal vanishes for 60 to 90 km through the central Tianshan, and you do not want to miss the one junction at Hejing.

Can I drive it in a normal rental car?
